Harry Potter fans were saddened when the series finally concluded, it seemed the end of an era. Buckbeak, the misunderstood Hippogriff, was introduced in the third Harry Potter novel ‘The Prisoner of Azkaban’ and featured in the subsequent fourth, fifth and sixth novels. A hippogriff is described has having the front half of an eagle and the hind half of a horse. They are considered proud creatures and one must earn their respect before they allow you to get close, however once your trust has been earned, they are intensely loyal and protective. It’s truly amazing how well Steiff is able to capture the magic of these characters in a soft or plush form. Size isn’t an issue when it comes to creating something special from the Harry Potter world. The Harry Potter Pendant may be small but they certainly display all the characteristics that made Harry Potter such a beloved character. Each detail has been captured, the famous scar on his forehead, the messy and unruly hair, the classic round glasses and of course his Gryffindor house colours of yellow and red. How fans rejoiced when a whole new host of characters and mythical creatures were introduced in the new ‘Fantastic Beasts’ films. Here was a chance to get to know lots more weird and wonderful creatures and fans certainly weren’t disappointed.

Nifflers were briefly introduced in the Harry Potter book series but never featured in the films. It is in the Fantastic Beast series of films that they truly come to life in all their sneaky, jewellery stealing glory. They are often described as being duck-billed and mole-like, they remind me a lot of a platypus in fact. The Steiff version has stayed true to the description and the Niffler does indeed have a long duck-like bill and is covered in thick, black fur. His dark eyes made of glass peek out mischievously behind the black fur. His little paws stand ready to spirit away all your jewels so he can tuck it away for his collection. What Fantastic Beasts collection would be complete without Dougal the Demiguise and his adoptive charge, the Occamy? Dougal has to be one of the wisest and soulful characters from the series, his primate features are apparent as are his future-seeing and all-knowing eyes. This is one of the softest and cuddliest plush items from the collection, it’s difficult to resist giving him a good cuddle. His eyes are definitely the main feature and they seem to gaze right into your soul, he is one of my favourites and Steiff have outdone themselves in creating such a memorable character. The Occamy may have only featured briefly in the first film but what a magnificent creature, it’s hard not to be awed by its beauty. The same can be said for Steiff’s plush version. The main thing that stands out is the unusual snake-like shape and then the beautiful colours of the fur coat. The fur coat feels almost feathery and velvety and it’s hard to put down once you’ve picked it up for a cuddle. This is an impressive item and no collection would be complete without it. One of most heart-warming relationships in Fantastic Beasts is that between Newt and the Bowtruckle named Pickett. Bowtruckles resemble a green-coloured stick insect and look rather like a walking piece of bark, which is perfect camouflage for the tree-dwelling creatures. Steiff has created the Bowtruckle in the finest of green wool felt and is a limited-edition of only 1,500 pieces.
